Premier League of Belize: Verdes maul Progresso 4-1

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes had no mercy in beating Progresso 4-1 in Week 6 of the Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Closing Championship at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio.

What a difference a season makes. Last tournament Progresso were fighting for the top spots. A few weeks later they are struggling. Sunday was another bad day for them.

Krisean Lopez started things off by scoring two goals in the first ten; the first one in the third and the second one in the 10^th. Colombian Ronald Benavides increased the lead to 3-0 in the 20^th minute.

Brazilian Aloisio Teixeira scored Progresso’s only goal in the 62^nd minute. Teixeira became the first player to score against Verdes. The leaders had gone 511 without allowing a goal.

Argentine player Matías Verón put the game away in the 75^th with the final goal for the 4-1 Verdes’ victory.

Verdes totalled 18 points atop the standings. Coupled with Benque Viejo United’s 2-1 loss to Port Layola, they increased their lead from three to five points. After Benque United’s stumble, the Green Machine are now the only undefeated club in the PLB.

Progresso remained at four points and dropped from fifth to sixth place as Wagiya jumped past them with their 3-2 win over the Belmopan Bandits.

The other weekend game saw Altitude beat Police Benque 2-1 in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday night.
