By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, a pivotal meeting was convened in Belmopan, with the Chief Agriculture Officer, Dr. Victoriano Pascual, Miguel Balan, Belize District Agriculture Coordinator, and representatives from the Meteorological Service and Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology.
They were also joined by Peter Dorward from the University of Reading.
Discussions included the recent field visit conducted in the Belize and Corozal Districts to implement and evaluate the use of Participatory Integrated Climate Services for Agriculture (PICSA) in Belize.
The Participatory Integrated Climate Services for Agriculture (PICSA) approach is designed to empower farmers by facilitating informed decision-making based on precise, location-specific climate and weather information.
By offering insights into locally relevant crop, livestock, and livelihood options through participatory tools, PICSA supports farmers in navigating decision-making processes.
The Ministry says that through a farmer-centric lens, PICSA enables farmers to consider their existing resources, analyze historical climate information and forecasts, and identify suitable crop, livestock, or livelihood options to address climate challenges.
This participatory approach empowers farmers to evaluate and implement sustainable coping and adaptation strategies.
Led by the University of Reading (UoR), PICSA has successfully instigated innovation and positive change among hundreds of thousands of farmers in over 30 countries.
The introduction of PICSA to Belize aligns with global efforts to enhance agricultural resilience in the face of climate challenges.
“It underscores Belize’s commitment to empowering its farming communities through innovative and sustainable practices. As discussions progress, the implementation and evaluation of PICSA in Belize promise to bring about positive transformations in the agricultural landscape, fostering resilience, and empowering local farmers,” the Ministry noted.
