By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Firefighters continue to respond to road traffic accidents and other medical emergencies with the use of their assigned ambulance.
And Minister of Disaster Risk Management, Orlando Habet says that the pilot project has been a success.
“We have done a great effort, and also piloting an ambulance service in the Cayo district where we all already have six ambulances in San Ignacio, Benque, Santa Elena, Belmopan, and it has been working really well because as we know the ambulance service through the ministry of health will only transport a patient from one hospital to the next, but if there is a road accident nobody there is no ambulance so we provide that service currently and there has been a great success,” Habet stated.
However, the Minister and his team are working now to make this project sustainable with regards to the maintenance of the ambulance.
“What we have to do now is to make it sustainable, because who will pay for it? Who will replenish the tires when they are worn out? Servicing of the engines, the fuel and everything else but luckily the fire act gives us the opportunity to be able to work along with the insurance companies,” Habet added.
Firefighters are also engaged in training for emergency management services.
