By Breaking Belize News Staff: Gilberto Esquiliano Jr., a 36-year-old mechanic, was sentenced to three months in prison after lashing his father in the head with a metal pipe, rendering him unconscious, landing him in the hospital and requiring stitches after he was refused from seeing his own children.
Esquiliano Jr. appeared in court unrepresented on Tuesday, charged with a single count of wounding against his father. He wasted no time in pleading guilty. The Magistrate, however, expressed concern that he was only charged with wounding for the crime which caused his father a 2-inch deep cut that required stitches and caused a severe head injury. The Magistrate was of the opinion that Esquiliano Jr. should have been charged with a more serious offense in the High Court.
Due to the violent nature of the crime and being against his own father, the Magistrate decided to impose a custodial sentence of three months in jail.
According to reports, Esquiliano Jr. visited his father’s home in King’s Park on January 21 to visit his children, who live at his father’s house. When his step-mother and father denied him from seeing the children because they were sleeping, he reportedly became enraged and choked his father, who managed to escaped. He was locked out of the house but allegedly pried his way back in with a metal pipe, which he then used to wound his father.
