Student loses $600 to scammer selling iPhone Pro Max 11 on “Buy and Sell” social media page

By Aaron Humes: Police say a Belize City student alleges she was ripped off of $600 that she set aside to buy an iPhone from a Facebook “Buy and Sell” page.

According to 17-year-old Leandra Bennett, on January 21, while scrolling through the social media page, she saw a post made by an account name “Rubicel” advertising a Rose Gold iPhone 11 Pro max on sale for $600. Bennett said she communicated with the person behind the advert via Facebook Messenger, where it was agreed that Miss Bennett is to secure the phone by depositing $600, and the phone will be shipped to her.

The next day, which is today, Monday, the money was deposited to a Belize Bank account and subsequently acknowledged as received.

But the person with whom Bennett communicated blocked her on the platform shortly thereafter, and she has seen neither the phone nor the money.

A letter of request for information to the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) was prepared, and a suspect has been identified as police investigations continue.
