Mahogany Heights man fined $4,500 for half pound of weed

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Mahogany Heights man, Emanuel Thompson, 20, was fined $4,500 in court today after he was charged with drug trafficking for half-pound of marijuana he was caught with.

Thompson appeared in court unrepresented on Monday and was read a single charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply to another. He wasted no time and pleaded guilty. For his plea, he was given a non-custodial sentence of a fine of $4,500 plus $5 cost of court, which he must pay by August 31, or face 18 months in jail.

Thompson was arrested on January 20 after a police mobile spotted him on a bicycle on Barrack Road. As police approached, fled and when officers caught up with him, he was seen disposing of a bag which was later recovered and contained 234 grams of marijuana.
