By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Police in Ecuador have arrested 68 people after they attempted to take over a hospital on Sunday, the Associated French Press reports.
Authorities informed via social media that they detained the “alleged terrorists” who were trying to take over the hospital.
The detentions came as Ecuador agreed with Peru, Colombia and Bolivia to launch a new security network, with the deal reached at an emergency meeting held as the region watches bloodshed spiral in once-peaceful Ecuador.
During the operation, guns and drugs were also seized.
Police also raided a “rehabilitation center” that housed a gang command center and brothel, and where several alleged gang members were hiding.
The country experienced a recent spate of violence sparked by the prison escape of Adolfo Macias, a drug kingpin known as “Fito.”
President Daniel Noboa imposed a state of emergency and declared the country in a “war” against gangs in response.
Since then, there have been an attack on a TV station live and cartels threatened to execute civilians and security forces.
