By Horace Palacio: Mexico has set a new historic high in papaya exports, shipping an impressive 203,170 tons to 15 countries in 2022. This significant volume accounts for 46 percent of the world’s papaya exports, a remarkable feat that underscores Mexico’s growing influence in the global fruit market. The United States emerged as the top buyer, importing papayas worth over $110 million. Other regular importers include Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands, with new markets such as Brazil, Finland, Australia, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, and Belize also showing interest, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The nation’s papaya production has seen a notable increase of 48.3 percent over the last decade, rising from 765,000 tons in 2013 to 1.135 million tons by the end of 2023. This upward trend is also evident in the last five years, with a consistent increase in national production. The Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) reported that the number of hectares dedicated to papaya cultivation expanded from 16,367 to 20,681, while yield per hectare grew from 51.4 to 56.8 tons.
Mexico’s success in papaya production can be attributed to 19 dedicated institutions across the country, with major contributions from states like Oaxaca, Colima, Chiapas, Veracruz, and Michoacán. Other states such as Guerrero, San Luis Potosí, Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Tabasco, and more also contribute to the thriving papaya industry.
The per capita annual consumption of papaya in Mexico stands at 7.4 kg, with the fruit being widely used in juices, smoothies, curd, ice cream, and desserts. Due to the rapid growth of papaya plants, the fruit is available throughout the year, with the highest production typically in May.
Mexico’s dominance in the papaya export market is a testament to the country’s agricultural prowess and the growing demand for this versatile fruit globally.
