Shop and residence damaged in Belize City fire

By Horace Palacio: A fire tore through a two-story building in Belize City on Monday night, damaging a shop and residence located on the ground floor. Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze.

CIB Northside personnel were the first to notice the fire around 7:45 pm while driving on New Road. Smoke billowed from the lower flat of a cement building at the corner of New Road and Pitts Alley, which housed Diamond Grocery and Laundromat. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to contain the blaze before it spread to any other structures.

The shop’s owner, identified as 33-year-old Foyjur Tufaeil, had locked up his business and residence at 6:00 pm that evening. Around 7:40 pm, he was alerted by concerned onlookers that his building was on fire. Upon arriving, Mr. Tufaeil witnessed the damage, which included two single beds and mattresses, assorted clothing, a cell phone, two fans, and an air conditioning unit. While the total value of the lost items is unknown, the estimated cost of the damage is around $5,000 Belize dollars.

Adding to the misfortune, the building was not insured. Despite the material losses, Mr. Tufaeil and any other residents of the building escaped the fire unharmed.

According to authorities, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire chief Philip Arthur was reportedly in command of the firefighting operation.
