“The first night we had over 30 hopefuls. Some great young talent showed up,” Defenders manager Reynaldo Malik told Breaking Belize News.
“Because of the remarkable turnout on the first night, we were forced to do cuts on the first night. However many of those cut still came back the 2nd night for the opportunity to scrimmage against established vets like Nigel Jones, D’von Campbell, Raul Vanegas, and John Kelly.”
The Defenders haven’t yet announced which players they are taking from the tryouts to strengthen their squad.
The Defenders, like the other seven BEBL teams, are preparing for the new Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) championship which tips off on Friday, January 26.
The Belize City team is working on producing a more competitive team this year after their fifth place finish in 2023 when they missed the playoffs.
To that end, on Thursday they also announced Roscoe Anderson Rhys as their new head coach and Stephen Williams Jr as assistant head coach on Thursday. Rhys was the assistant coach of the Orange Walk Running Rebels last season. Williams is starting his BEBL coaching career after being one of Belize’s top players over the past decade.
