By Aaron Humes: 28-year-old Shaquille Brian Perera of Lake Gardens, Ladyville, Belize District, is remanded on a charge of murder while a second man is being pursued by police.
Perera and another are accused of the Christmas Eve murder of Darnell Puerto at Maskall Street and the attempted murder of Jehvon Ramclam following an argument. It is noted that Perera saw a previous charge of murder of a minor 17 years old in Mahogany Heights in 2021 withdrawn due to lack of evidence.
Perera appeared in court on charges of murder, attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and wounding before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola who briefly explained the charges he faces are indictable offenses which means no plea will be taken from him and that at this time, she cannot grant him bail due to the nature of the offenses hence why he will be remanded.
But the accused insisted in court that police have the wrong man: “I live way dah Ladyville. I nuh know when this crime happen. I nuh even work dah city. I deh dah Tubal. I get charge for a city murder I nuh even know about…They nuh even wah to see who dah my alibi.”
According to Perera, he was at home before deciding to come to the City and that is when police picked him up and held him.
The Chief Magistrate replied that within a few weeks, the court will provide him with the disclosure in this case and that’s when he can address the court on the matter of his alibi defense. Perera’s next court date is February 29, 2024.
The shooting erupted when one of two men visited Maskall Street and asked Puerto and Ramclam who were together socializing to see his child’s mother. When he was told she was not there, he reportedly told them to watch their mouths and that he would come back for them. Shortly thereafter a black car pulled up and the wanted suspect opened fire. Puerto was pronounced dead on arrival while Ramclam remains hospitalized in stable condition.
