By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Twenty-two members of the Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT), who recently qualified to the CONCACAF League B after a flawless 6-0 run in Group A of CONCACAF League C, were given free land titles last Saturday in Santa Cruz, Stann Creek in recognition of their efforts, according to a report by the Ministry of Sports.

“Proud moment as Belize’s 22 undefeated female senior players receive their well-deserved land papers, a symbol of recognition for their historic journey from C league triumph to the upcoming B league,” the Ministry of Sports said in a social media post.

“A testament to dedication and victory on and off the field.”

The BWNT had a memorable run through the competition defeating Aruba, Bonaire, and Turks and Caicos Islands twice each to finish with a six consecutive victories record making a perfect 18 points while scoring 20 goals and conceding only one throughout the months of September, October, and November. What’s more, eight players made the CONCACAF Best XI throughout the three months the competition lasted. Mikhaila Bowden was voted to the Concacaf Best XI in the three consecutive months.

“Today represents a significant achievement for the esteemed members of the 2023 Senior Women’s National Team,” the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) said in a statement posted on social media.

“In an exemplary demonstration of progress and empowerment, these 22 accomplished athletes journeyed to Santa Cruz to initiate the process of acquiring individual land holdings in the Stann Creek District. This initiative, set to culminate in property ownership within a month, symbolizes a remarkable milestone in their personal and professional lives.”

The FFB said the player had to go through the formality of the application process, which was overseen by Minister of Youth, Sports & Transport Rodwell Ferguson, Chairman of Santa Cruz Village Vincent Scott, FFB Executive Jacqueline Pelayo, and National Sports Council Director Iris Centeno.

“This initiative not only honors their commendable victory in the 2023 Concacaf W- Road to Gold Cup but also celebrates their ascension to League B,” the FFB said.

“It is a fitting acknowledgment of their dedication and success, both on the international stage and within their national community.”
