By Breaking Belize News Staff: An American woman was killed on Monday by a shark in The Bahamas.

According to ABC News, the woman was paddleboarding with a male relative near the back of the Sandals resort, about three-quarters of a mile out to sea, when she was attacked.

A lifeguard responded and CPR was performed but the injuries to the right side of her body were too severe.

The Resort expressed sympathies on the death of their guest.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of a guest while on a paddleboarding activity nearly a mile from the shore. We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the guest’s family and loved ones. We remain in close contact with them and are providing all support possible during this difficult time,” the resort said.

Recently, during the ceremony for JetBlue inaugural flight from New York to Belize City, Prime Minister John Briceno made an open invitation to all visitors from across the world to visit Belize noting that sharks in Belize are trained.

“From the helicopter I took a picture of a hammerhead shark in the water, and by the way, the sharks in Belize are well trained, they don’t eat white people, so you’re safe, unlike in other countries so please come. We have trained them that when they’re really hungry, they might could eat a Belizean, but not the white people. Unlike what has happened unfortunately in The Bahamas, that’s serious,” the Prime Minister said.
