By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Women’s National Team rolled over Bonaire 5-1 on Thursday evening and stamped their ticket to Concacaf League B with authority, totalling 15 points in five games, scoring 19 goals, and allowing only one.
The ticket to Concacaf League B is quite an accomplishment for the BWNT who have gelled into a great unit and are moving up to greater and tougher challenges.
Khalydia Velasquez scored her fifth goal in the 18th minute at Stadion Antonio Trenidat in Rincon, Bonaire to open the score.
Playing at home, and having been beaten 3-0 in Belize, Bonaire weren’t about to roll over and die, and responded with a goal of their own in the 28th courtesy of Vurgy-Ann Visers.
But that just ignited captain Sabrina Eiley, who was playing for country and for her dad who recently passed away. Sabrina knocked in two goals, one in the 41st and the other in the 49th for Belize to lead 3-1.
Carlene Tillett secured a huge 5-1 win, nailing two more in the 81st and the 90’+3.
Belize needed one point, to secure the qualifying ticket as Aruba had routed Turks and Caicos 8-0 in the earlier game, but Belize were not to be outdone today and made sure they collected three points ahead of their final game against Aruba on Monday.
Belize have topped Group A regardless of the outcome of the final match as Aruba, now with nine points, can only make 12 should they beat Belize on Monday.
That, however, is not in the BWNT’s plans who are aiming to finish the double round robin with a perfect record of 6-0.
Despite the Aruba game only being for-the-record, that will be Belize’s toughest match. Belize already beat them, but the 2-0 score in Belmopan on Independence Day is the closest score in all five games so far.
The BWNT fly on Friday to Aruba for Monday’s match at the Guillermo P. Trinidad Stadium in Oranjestad at 3:00 pm (1:00 pm Belize Time).
For their part, Bonaire (4 points) are flying to Turks and Caicos Islands for their Monday game against Turks and Caicos (1 point) scheduled for 4:00 pm (3:00 pm Belize Time).
