90-year-old Belizean-American busted for bringing in over 5 pounds of marijuana and over $33,000 in undeclared currency

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 90-year-old Belizean-American man, Roy Alec Tillett, was caught with 2,397 grams (over 5 pounds) of marijuana upon his arrival at the Philip Goldson International Airport. Tillett, a Belizean/American Air Force veteran of Fairweather Street, Belize City, was charged with importing a controlled drug after entering Belize on Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Tillett pleaded guilty to the drug importation charge and was fined $7,000, along with a $5 court fee, which he was ordered to pay immediately or face three years in prison.

However, Tillett’s troubles did not end there. Before he could pay the hefty fine, police charged him with an additional offense for failing to declare goods. Allegedly, Tillett did not declare $33,813.42 in Belizean and U.S. currency he was carrying in his baggage, triggering a customs offense. The Comptroller of Customs is seeking to forfeit three times the undeclared amount, totaling $101,440.26.

Tillett pleaded not guilty to the customs charge. Despite his dual Belizean and American citizenship, he was granted bail under strict conditions. His bail was set at $10,000 with two sureties of $5,000 each. The conditions include surrendering his passport, obtaining court permission before leaving the country, and signing in weekly at the Raccoon Street Police Station.

Tillett’s next court appearance is scheduled for December 11, 2024.
