By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): While football fans across Belize follow every kick of this World Cup, one man in the stands has been doing it longer than almost anyone alive, and his story is one for the ages.
Meet Hartmut Scherzer, an 88-year-old German journalist covering his 17th World Cup. Since Chile in 1962, he has not missed a single tournament, travelling the globe for more than 60 years to follow the beautiful game. Mexico, England, Brazil, Russia, Italy, and now the United States, he has seen it all.
His passion recently earned him a moment few reporters ever experience. At a Germany press conference at Houston Stadium, the room fell silent as the elderly man in a yellow shirt and worn jeans leaned in to ask a question. The response was spontaneous applause, from fellow journalists right up to Germany’s coach Julian Nagelsmann himself. In Germany, Scherzer is a household name.
What makes his story remarkable is not just the years, but everything he has witnessed. Scherzer has reported on every football legend you can think of, from Pelé to Diego Maradona to Lionel Messi. He has watched Germany lift the World Cup three times, savouring their triumphs in 1974, 1990, and 2014.
His memories are the stuff fans dream of. When asked about the best World Cup he has seen in person, he pointed to Germany 1974 and Mexico 1986, recalling that Maradona’s famous slalom run was nothing short of “art.” The greatest player he ever saw? Without hesitation, Pelé.
So what keeps a man almost 90 years old boarding 12-hour flights to chase football around the world? His answer, shared with La Gazzetta dello Sport, was simple and full of heart. “Passion. Only and solely passion.”
For Belizean fans young and old, Scherzer’s story is a beautiful reminder of just how deeply football can grip the soul. Six decades on, the love of the game still burns as bright as ever, and that is something any true fan can understand.
