By Horace Palacio: Former Minister of Transport Rodwell Ferguson is speaking out amid a widening corruption scandal involving the alleged misappropriation of more than $80,000 from the Spanish Lookout office of the Transport Department.
Ferguson, who previously oversaw the Ministry of Transport, said he was the one who initiated the audit that uncovered the missing funds. In a public statement, he revealed that concerns were first brought to his attention by members of the Mennonite community, prompting him to instruct the internal auditor to launch an investigation. “When I left, the investigation was going on. I was told the loss was over $70,000,” Ferguson stated.
Now that the scandal has come to light, Ferguson is making it clear where he believes the lines of responsibility fall. “The Minister doesn’t sign off on documents. I want the public to understand that,” he said. “My job was to implement policy, not manage accounts.” He pointed out that the day-to-day financial management of the Ministry lies with the CEO, not the political directorate.
Ferguson went further, saying the case is a reflection of deeper problems within government. “There is corruption in Ministries,” he stated bluntly. “Let crooks fall where they may. I want to clear my name.”
Meanwhile, current CEO Chester Williams has confirmed that the matter is now under a full investigation. The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) is actively involved, alongside internal auditors, and Williams has indicated that the missing amount could exceed $80,000 once the full extent is uncovered.
As the investigation unfolds, pressure is mounting for transparency and for those responsible to be held accountable—regardless of rank or position.
