By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 71-year-old man from Flowers Bank Village was fined on Wednesday after pleading guilty to wounding his daughter during a heated family dispute.

Jeffery McKoy appeared before Magistrate Ludlow Black in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with wounding 47-year-old Theresia Mitchell, his daughter. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 12, 2025, during an argument at their family yard.

According to police, Mitchell reported that her father arrived home under the influence of alcohol and started an argument. When she attempted to leave the house, McKoy allegedly blocked her path, became increasingly aggressive, and threatened to chop off her feet. He then reportedly swung a machete, injuring her left forearm. A doctor later classified the injury as wounding.

McKoy initially pleaded guilty with an explanation, claiming he acted in self-defense. He told the court that his daughter was the one who first became aggressive and even threatened to set the house on fire. However, after Magistrate Black explained that a claim of self-defense contradicted a guilty plea, McKoy changed his plea to guilty and accepted responsibility for his actions.

In handing down the sentence, Magistrate Black considered McKoy’s age, early guilty plea, and lack of previous convictions. However, he also noted the seriousness of the offense and the fact that the victim was his own daughter.

McKoy was fined $400 plus $5 cost of court and ordered to pay the fine by August 29, 2025, or face four months in prison. He was also bound over to keep the peace for one year, with a penalty of $400 or four months’ imprisonment if he fails to comply.
