By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 60-year-old Belize City courier has received his first drug conviction after pleading guilty to possessing 0.4 grams of crack cocaine.
Emerson Egbert Engleton Sr., of Cleghorn Street, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug.
As a first-time offender, Engleton was given a non-custodial sentence and fined $450, along with $5 in court costs. He must pay the total by September 25, 2026, or serve three months in prison.
The charge arose from an incident near the New Road checkpoint in Belize City on July 8, 2026.
Police reported that officers on mobile patrol saw Engleton riding a bicycle out of an alley near New Road and signalled for him to stop. He allegedly refused and attempted to flee, prompting an officer to pursue and detain him.
During a search for illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition, police allegedly found a small piece of foil containing crack cocaine in Engleton’s pants pocket.
He was taken to the Queen Street Police Station, where the substance was weighed and recorded at 0.4 grams.
