By Aaron Humes: On this September 21, Belizeans will gather, weather permitting, to celebrate the country’s 44th Independence Day, reflecting on the historic journey that led to liberation from colonial rule.
Moses “Shyne” Barrow, the Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), posted official greetings on social media, in which he emphasized the need for unity and self-reliance as the nation continues to navigate its post-colonial path.
Barrow highlighted the importance of harnessing the vision and resilience of Belize’s forebears to build a brighter future. “May we be blessed to come together and build a Belize that realizes the promise of Independence, that promise is self-reliance, no need to walk on the economic crutches of the State, we need to empower our people so the State relies on the masses for economic viability.”
“Self-reliance does not mean self-preservation,” Barrow continued. “…the objective must never be to preserve one’s self rather it must always be togetherness, it must always be to preserve the greater good for the whole of Belize.”
Barrow also spoke candidly about the challenges that the nation faces, including the widespread issues of corruption and the temptation to compromise values for short-term gains. He called upon Belizeans to exhibit courage and integrity in the nation-building process, acknowledging the potential hardships that sacrifices may entail. “Patriotism requires tremendous sacrifice today,” Barrow noted, underscoring the importance of perseverance for a prosperous tomorrow.
