By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A six-man breakaway group, consisting of four Belizeans and two foreigners, are the early leaders of the 94th Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic in the first 30 miles up to La Democracia.
Belizeans Joslyn Chavarria, Jr. of Team Santinos, Brandon Cattouse of Team Valvoline, Carlton Robinson of Alliance United, and Greg Lovell of Team Lovell along with Honduran Luis Lopez and American Abner Maxwell of Skyline Cadence are ahead of the main peloton by a minute and six seconds on the way to San Ignacio though recent reports says the main peloton is closing up.
The latest report said Lopez had fallen behind.
The 94th edition of Belizean biggest and most traditional cycling event features 117 riders from Belize, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, according to the official report by the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB). Twenty teams and 18 unattached riders are competing in the race that started as an expedition to Cayo in 1928, which was won by Elstan Kerr.
The 139.9-mile race, organized by the CFB, started at Newtown Barracks by the Digi Park in Belize City, rides to San Ignacio and returns to Digi Park via the George Price Highway. In 2023, 501 Valvoline’s Oscar Quiroz won the 93rd edition in five hours, 43 minutes, and 19 seconds (5:43:19). Oscar was three minutes and seven seconds (00:03:07) shy of the 5:40:12 record set by American Ryan Bauman in 2008.
The peloton, including Oscar, 2023 second-place winner Cory Williams of the Williams Racing Team, and G-Flow’s Derrick Chavarria, are hot on the trail of the six-man group.
