By Aaron Humes: A traffic accident occurred on Sunday, September 21, around 10:50 AM, when a male cyclist was struck by a school bus on Marage Road. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Gabriel Fernando Mai, was riding his bicycle at the time of the collision.
According to authorities, the accident occurred shortly after 10:40 a.m. as a 23-year-old bus driver from Lords Bank village was operating a yellow and black Thomas Built school bus. He was traveling from Perez Road toward the Milpa area when he noticed Mai cycling on the right side of the road.
Witnesses report that as the bus passed the intersection with Egbert Quilter Avenue, Mai unexpectedly swerved in front of the vehicle. Despite the bus’s efforts to maneuver away to avoid the cyclist, the rider collided with the open door of the bus, leading to a tragic outcome as he fell beneath the vehicle. The right rear tire subsequently ran over him.
Mai sustained severe head and shoulder injuries. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where he was pronounced dead.
Ladyville Police began conducting an investigation; the bus driver was detained for questioning, and a urine sample was obtained as part of standard procedure. The unlicensed yellow school bus was impounded for inspection.
The police have confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, as police continue to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.
