By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who pleaded guilty to possession of an undetermined amount of cocaine has been sent to prison after he was unable to pay an old outstanding court fine.
Jamal Alexander Jones Jr., 29, a Waste Control worker, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug.
Jones was busted on Saturday, August 22, 2026, on Administration Drive in Belize City with an amount of cocaine reportedly so small that it could not register on the gram scale.
For the drug offence, Jones was fined $130 plus $5 cost of court and was given until October 30, 2026, to pay. In default, he faces one month imprisonment.
However, the court also discovered that Jones had an outstanding $105 fine stemming from a 2023 conviction. The Magistrate ordered that the outstanding amount be paid immediately before he could be released.
Jones was unable to pay the $105 and was subsequently escorted to the Belize Central Prison on a warrant to serve prison time in default of the outstanding fine.
