By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A group of 27 beekeepers from Belize visited Peten, Guatemala, to learn from the apiculture practices of two local Peten organizations based in San Andrés: the Nuevo Campeche Co-Operative and the Selva Maya Association, according to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE).
Seventeen beekeepers who participated in the Apiculture Learning Route/Exchange Visit are from eight beekeeping producer organizations and the other 10 are from Resilient Rural Belize, MAFSE, and the Cooperatives Department.
The visit was organized by the Resilient Rural Belize Programme, the Ministry of Agriculture Beekeeping Unit, and the Guatemalan Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food.

MAFSE said the main goal of the visit was to expose the Belizean beekeepers to the techniques of queen rearing, genetic improvement, traceability, food safety, and honey by-products that are used by their Guatemalan counterparts.
The Belizean beekeepers also saw how the regenerative beekeeping system, which enhances the profitability and environmental sustainability of apiculture, is implemented by the Nuevo Campeche Co-Operative and the Selva Maya Association. The visit was a valuable opportunity for the Belizean beekeepers to gain practical knowledge and skills that will help them improve their own apiculture operations and contribute to the development of the honey industry in Belize.
MAFSE expressed condolences to the family of beekeeper Alvin Loredo from the Toledo District. Loredo, who was a participant in the visit, passed away during the last day of the visit after suffering a heart attack, MAFSE said.
