By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Belize Police Department, Ministry of Education and the US Embassy joined efforts at the graduation for the Positive Engagement and Civic Education (PEACE) program.

Commander of Community Policing Howell Gillett said that 250 primary school students from ten primary schools in the Belize district graduated from the program.

A total of 1,338 students participated and were successful.

Gillett explained that other graduation ceremonies will be held at the schools in the coming weeks for the remaining students.

The PEACE program aims to address issues such as respecting others, resisting negative peer pressure, facts about gangs, having pride in your community, refusal skills, anger management, types of bullying and becoming positive role models.

“Our vision is to collaborate with young people during their formative years so as to prevent any policing intervention in the future.

The program commenced as a pilot project in October of last year for ten schools within the Belize district. At the commencement of the new school year, we intend to roll out countrywide,” Gillett explained.

The program is tailored to meet the needs of Belizean students and was delivered by trained Community policing officers.
