By Aaron Humes: While solving crimes and community initiatives get the headlines, the search and seizure of illegal firearms and drugs is often the unnoticed “dirty work” for the Belize Police Department.
In that regard, as detailed by Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith in the last press briefing for 2025 earlier today, Wednesday, the Department has had a good year. With the removal of an AR-15 rifle and various ammunition on Tuesday, officers have seized 234 firearms, including 123 nine-millimeter pistols and 14 high-powered rifles, as well as 7,477 total rounds of various ammunition.
A total of 194 persons were arrested and charged with offenses related to firearms and ammunition.
As it relates to drugs, 705,638 grams of cannabis (about 1,555 pounds) were seized, 41,784 grams (about 92 pounds) of cocaine, and over 5,000 grams (176 ounces or 11 pounds) of crack cocaine were all seized to date.
A total of 1,562 persons were charged with drug-related offenses.
