By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old Honduran national is being held at the Belize Central Prison pending his deportation after pleading guilty to overstaying his visitor’s permit by more than five months.
Jeyson Isaias Matute Mejia, a construction worker who had been living on Green Street in Belama Phase 3, appeared in court on Monday charged with failure to comply with the conditions of a visitor’s permit under the Belize Immigration Act.
According to allegations, Mejia entered Belize on July 23, 2025, and was granted permission to remain in the country until August 22, 2025. However, he failed to apply for an extension and remained in Belize illegally beyond the permitted period. When questioned on January 5, 2026, Mejia presented his Honduran passport showing the expired visitor’s stamp.
Mejia pleaded guilty to the offense and was fined $1,000 plus $5 in court costs, payable forthwith, in default of six months’ imprisonment. The Belize Immigration Department also applied for his removal from Belize, an application which was granted by the court.
Although Mejia’s grandmother paid the fine on his behalf, he is to remain at the Belize Central Prison until arrangements are finalized for his expulsion from the country.
