By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Jyven Gonzalez of L39ION of Los Angeles powered through the Shell Gas Station in Orange Walk Town to claim the $1,000 station prize, leading the four-man breakaway that has defined the 2026 New Year’s Day Cycling Classic so far. He was followed across the line by Kenyon Stanford (G‑Flow), Tarique Flowers (A. Mahler Digi Alliance), and Justin Williams (L39ION of Los Angeles).
The Elite race began at 9:00 am at the Mexico–Belize border in the Corozal District, launching riders into the full 92‑mile journey on the Philip Goldson Highway. The first major move came early when Derrick Chavarría attacked solo, holding off the peloton for several miles before being reeled back in.
Soon after Chavarría was caught, a four-man breakaway formed with Gonzalez, Flowers, Byron Pope (A. Mahler Digi Alliance), and Stanford. A few miles later, Justin Williams bridged across to make it five. Under the increased pressure, Pope was the rider who eventually lost contact, reducing the group back to four.
By 10:19 am, the leaders swept through Orange Walk Town with well over a minute on the peloton. Past Carmelita, the quartet continued to work smoothly, maintaining their advantage as they push toward the Belize District.
With the Masters (35+ and 50+), Women, and Junior categories also deep into their races, the Elite storyline remains centered on the strength and cohesion of the front four — two from L39ION, one from A. Mahler Digi Alliance, and one from G‑Flow — as the peloton works to keep the gap from widening further.
