By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The battle for the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic has taken another dramatic twist just before Mile 22, as 2024 champion Honduran Luis López has been dropped by the front three riders, losing touch with the breakaway group that had dominated the race earlier.
López, who had joined the nine-man lead group past the Belmopan junction, fought to maintain pace with Colombian Uriel Espinoza (Tenis Stars), Jim Brown (Miami Blazers), and American Alfredo Bueno (Legion of Los Angeles). However, as the race intensified, the trio managed to pull away, leaving López behind.
Now, a seven-man chase group, including top Belizean cyclists Derrick Chavarria (G-Flow), Jyven Gonzalez (G-Flow), and Cory Williams (Miami Blazers), is working hard to close the gap. Meanwhile, 55-year-old American Patrick Raines and Colombian David Abreo had been struggling to stay in contention.
With the front group now reduced and strategy playing a critical role, riders are making decisive moves in an effort to position themselves for the final push to Belize City but it’s now a given that a foreigner will win with the front three now leading by nearly four minutes.
