By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2025 Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic has reached a decisive moment, as the leading trio—Colombian Uriel Omar Espinoza, American Alfredo Bueno, and British rider Jim Brown—now hold a commanding four-minute lead past Hattieville, just 15 miles away from the finish line in Belize City.
With such a significant gap, a foreign rider appears almost certain to claim victory, as Belize’s hopefuls struggle to close the distance and reenter the fight for the title.
Earlier in the race, a breakaway formed when four riders, including 2024 champion Luis López, pulled ahead just before Democracia at Mile 31. The remaining seven riders in the chase group did not immediately react, allowing the leading group to establish a gap. However, as the race progressed, López was dropped from the front three just before Mile 22, unable to match the relentless pace set by Espinoza, Brown, and Bueno.
Behind them, a seven-man chase group, including top Belizean cyclists Derrick Chavarria (G-Flow), Jyven Gonzalez (G-Flow), and Cory Williams (Miami Blazers), struggled to mount a response, failing to close the gap as the leaders maintained their firm grip on the race.
Further back, 55-year-old American Patrick Raines and Colombian David Abreo found themselves losing ground as the intensity of the race continued to rise.
With the front three pressing toward Belize City, the battle has now shifted to endurance and strategy, as the remaining contenders attempt to chase them down before the final miles. The tension is building for what promises to be a dramatic conclusion to Belize’s most celebrated cycling event.
