By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The battle for the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic is heating up as four riders have broken away from the pack just before reaching Mile 31 at Democracia. Defending champion Luis López (LL Team), Colombian Uriel Espinoza (Tenis Stars), Jim Brown (Miami Blazers), and American Alfredo Bueno (Legion of Los Angeles) have pulled ahead, opening a two-minute gap over their nearest chasers.
A seven-man chase group, include top Belizean riders Derrick Chavarria (G-Flow), Jyven Gonzalez (G-Flow) and Cory Williams (Miami Blazers).
Fifty-five-year-old American Patrick Raines and Colombian David Abreo, were struggling to stay in contention, falling behind as the relentless pace takes its toll.
Earlier, the nine-man group had that passed the Belmopan junction increased to 11 when López joined them.
With exhaustion setting in and no guarantees on the final outcome, strategy will play a crucial role in determining who emerges victorious. Expect more fireworks as the race nears its thrilling conclusion.
