By Horace Palacio: As the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially commences today, Belize is preparing for what meteorologists predict will be an above-average season. Forecasts anticipate a range of 17 to 25 named storms, a notable increase from the average of 14 storms typically experienced in a season.
Two primary factors are contributing to this heightened prediction. The potential development of a La Niña weather pattern during the peak hurricane season could intensify storm activity across the Atlantic Basin. Additionally, above-average sea surface temperatures are providing the energy needed for the formation and intensification of hurricanes.
While the exact path of these storms remains uncertain, the increased likelihood of their development has placed Belize on high alert. The National Meteorological Service (NMS) of Belize is actively monitoring and tracking developing weather systems. They are committed to providing timely alerts to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and the public in the event of any potential threats to the country.
This forecast underscores the importance of preparedness, particularly for a nation as vulnerable to tropical cyclones as Belize. Recognizing this, the NMS and NEMO are urging all citizens to review and update their family emergency plans, ensuring that everyone knows the proper procedures to follow in case of a hurricane.
The organizations also emphasize the importance of gathering essential supplies such as food, water, batteries, and first-aid kits. Additionally, they urge the public to rely solely on official channels for information, such as the NMS and NEMO, to avoid the spread of misinformation and unnecessary panic.
