By Rubén Morales Iglesias: 2023 Krem’s New Year’s Day Cycling Classic Champions Derrick Chavarria, American John Delong, Kaya Cattouse, and Tyler Tejeda will be riding to repeat their achievement on Monday, January 1, 2023 in the 33rd annual race.

In 2023, Team FAL’s Derrick Chavarria won the race in three hours, 54 minutes, and 48 seconds (3:54:48) topping the Elite and Under 23 Categories. American John Delong clinched the Masters in 3:55:40. Kaya Cattouse ran away with the Women’s Classic finishing solo in 2:55:26. Tyler Tejeda edged seven other riders in the sprint to the finish line to capture the Junior Race in 3:02:10.

All four will be defending their titles on Monday.

Chavarria is now with G-Flow. While he’ll have the support of teammates Jyven Gonzalez and Eric Trapp, he’ll have to contend with Williams Racing Team’s Justin and Cory Williams and American Dante Young, Valvoline’s Oscar Quiroz, Mairon Muñoz, and Brandon Cattouse, Rolling Shattaz Wasani Castro, Team Lovell’s Giovanni Lovell, Joggers’ Gian Lino, Alliance United’s Byron Pope and Joshua Fuller, his brother Joslyn Chavarria Jr riding for Team Santino’s, Team Police Richard Santiago.

DeLong (Masters 40+) stands a good chance once again in the Masters but now has to contend with Justin Williams who is new Masters at 35+. Both are contenders to win the overall race.

In the Junior’s, Tejeda, now riding for Valvikine, and supported by teammate Jaheim Lewis, will have to stave off G-Flow’s Benito Gutierrez, Jaylen Briceño, Devin Major and Keith Enwright, Rolling Shattaz Evrit Matute and Richard Risado, Team Cayo’s Travis Grinage, Chavarria’s Antonio and Keon Alford, and an eigh-tman Griga Cycling Team led by Tamron Morris, and Wateva Boyz Daniel Carmmond.

In the Women’s race, four-time winner Kaya Cattouse (2012, 2016, 2019, 2023) riding for LA Sweat again stands a great chance of repeating. She’ll have to deal with three competitors Gabriel Gabourel, American Mary Joyce Monton of the Austin Outlaws, and Griga’s Cycling’s Arielle Gordon. Patricia and Paulita Chavarria aren’t competing this year.

Gabourel has been Kaya’s protégé and is expected to ride in tandem with the Champion though they are in competing teams.

Rolling Shattaz-BZ Boyz’s Dwight Lopez who won the 2023 Masters Category 3 and Team Gonz’s Keiron Ysaguirre who claimed the Masters Categories 4/5 top spot will also be defending their titles. Ysaguirre is now riding for DigiONE Cycling.

Devyn Major who won the Youth Category will also be defending his title.
