By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Coast Guard personnel recovered a sizable quantity of marijuana from waters near the Turneffe Atoll during routine patrol operations.
The find was made on April 6 in the vicinity of Calabash Caye, where officers spotted a suspicious bag floating among seaweed. The package was retrieved and later found to contain parcels of cannabis.
Authorities estimate the haul weighed roughly 75 pounds, with an approximate value of $200,000 Belize dollars.
Investigators believe the drugs may be linked to larger shipments moving through the Caribbean, noting that such packages are sometimes lost or discarded at sea before washing ashore.
With no suspects identified, the drugs were processed as found property and handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
The Coast Guard says it will continue to maintain a strong presence in Belize’s waters to deter and disrupt illegal trafficking activities.
