19-year-old charged for rape after holding girlfriend hostage

By Aaron Humes: A 19-year-old man has been accused of holding captive and raping and assaulting his ex-girlfriend in the Orange Walk District.

While police have not confirmed all details, they have indicated that the suspect detained his ex-girlfriend in his Orange Walk apartment for two days, between Wednesday, October 22 and Friday, October 24 when they rescued her.

The complainant said she went to visit him, but when she went to leave, he demanded that they have sex before he would allow her to leave. She was subjected to physical violence and assault as well as extended detention, locked up without food, water, and medication, including turning off her cell phone when she tried to call for help.

The cycle of abuse continued until Friday morning, when police intervened and rescued her. Officers are said to have since obtained video evidence, and on Monday the young man was charged, although his name has not been released to protect the identity and privacy of the accuser.
