By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize now has its first soybean processing plant, a $14 million facility in Spanish Lookout.
Green Valley Oil, a sister operation of Quality Poultry, held the grand opening of the plant on Thursday. The facility produces Quality Vegetable Oil, Belize’s first locally made soybean oil.
The oil has already been used in Chicken Express restaurants nationwide for the past three months and is now on shelves at Quality Poultry outlets in every district.
General Manager Daniel Braun said reaching this point took years of work.
“Believe me, it is exciting. It’s been a lot of work and it’s a long time. So now having been able to launch this and say, you know what, we have reached this part, we are now bringing the oil into the market and having a good product,” Braun said.
He explained that the plant was built with room to grow. While it cannot yet supply 100% of the Belizean market, it is ready to add more equipment to boost output.
“The plant is ready and prepared to add a couple more pieces of equipment to increase capacity so we can handle the entire country of Belize when it comes to vegetable oil. And then we can also go for export,” he said.
Braun added that a list of countries has already reached out about buying refined vegetable oil, but the company will prioritize the local market first.
To mark the launch, Quality Poultry is offering 25% off Quality Vegetable Oil at its stores nationwide this Friday and Saturday.
