$12.50 off your light bill. Is that a good deal?

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Cabinet has raised the GST exemption on electricity bills from $100 to $200, effective September 1.

Government says more than 91,000 customers benefit, or 96% of all residential accounts.

Here is what that actually means at your kitchen table.

If your bill is $100 or less, nothing changes. You were already exempt.

If your bill sits between $101 and $200, you now save the 12.5% GST. At the top end, that is $12.50 a month. Below that, it is less.

If your bill runs over $200, you save nothing at all.

So the 91,000 figure includes a large number of people who were already not paying GST on their light bill before this week.

The cost to government is roughly half a million dollars a month in forgone revenue.

Cabinet also moved on the bigger problem. It approved the Emergency Declaration allowing BEL to procure additional generation capacity for the projected 2027 shortfall, and backed expanding the Social Rate from 60 kWh to 80 kWh, reaching about 17,000 customers.

So, BBN family, is $12.50 a month meaningful relief or not nearly enough? Comment below.
