By Breaking Belize News Staff: A public drunken brawl near the iconic Swing Bridge ended in court for two Belize City men after they were caught wrestling on the street in broad daylight.

Julio Antonio Lopez, 39, a construction worker of Iguana Street, and Edwardo Assi, 29, a fisherman of West Street, appeared on Tuesday morning before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #2, where they both pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct.

The altercation occurred on Monday, July 21, 2025, around 12:50 p.m. on Regent Street West, near the well-known Bucket Bar. According to police reports, officers from the GSU and Interdiction Unit were patrolling in an unmarked vehicle when they spotted two Hispanic men grappling in the middle of the street. The officers, Sgt. Tian Smith and Cpl. Terence Sutherland, quickly intervened after identifying themselves and broke up the fight.

Witnesses described the men as visibly intoxicated, with red eyes, slurred speech, and reeking of alcohol. One man was shirtless, wearing dirty khaki ¾ pants and a bandage on his heel, while the other wore grey ¾ pants and a matching t-shirt.

Despite arriving together in the prison van, Lopez and Assi left court separately after being fined $100 each plus $5 cost of court. They must pay the fine by July 31 or face a month in prison.

The motive behind the altercation remains unknown.
