Honduras opens with a powerful 3-0 win over Panama in AFECAVOL U23 Women’s Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Honduras made an emphatic entrance at the VII AFECAVOL U23 Women’s Central American Championship, sweeping Panama 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-12) in their first match of the tournament at the Belize City Civic Center on Monday, July 21.

Strong performance and sharp execution

After sitting out opening day, Honduras wasted no time in demonstrating its strength. The team dominated across all stats—leading in attacks (37-15), blocks (6-4), and service aces (6-2). More importantly, they limited unforced errors to just 18, while Panama gave away 26.

Sasha Kawas led the Honduran offense with 17 points, supported by Dazy Durán and Shantte Siliezar who tallied eight points each. For Panama, Janeth Fuentes was the top scorer with seven points.

Captain reactions Team captain Dazly Durán praised Honduras’ teamwork:

“We’re really happy to start this event on the right foot. This win gives us some confidence for our second match, which will be tougher against Guatemala. Panama defends well, but we stayed focused and worked great as a team,” Durán said.

Panama’s captain Ruth Rivas reflected on their effort:

“It’s frustrating because I know we’re capable of more than what we’ve shown. We always keep our energy up even when we’re behind, because letting our mood drop would make things worse. We’re committed to giving our best in every match,” Panama captain Rivas said.

Honduras will now gear up for their encounter with Guatemala, while Panama looks to bounce back in its next outing against El Salvador who have also lost twice.
