By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After two days of action at the VII AFECAVOL U23 Women’s Central American Championship, host nation Belize lead the standings with an unbeaten 2-0 record, having swept Panama and El Salvador in commanding fashion.

The Belizean side demonstrated full control, especially in their second outing on Monday when they overpowered El Salvador 3-0 (25-5, 25-10, 25-11). Across two matches, Belize have conceded just 63 points while scoring 150—averaging a remarkable +43.5 point differential per game.

Star hitters Khaya Gordon, Fatoumata Camara and Nisaan Ramírez led the charge with 14 points apiece against El Salvador. Belize’s height advantage, aggressive service game (16 aces vs El Salvador), and collective cohesion have made them early favourites.

Head coach José Fontes praised the squad’s discipline and focus:

“It was a relatively easy win, but what stood out was the resilience of our captain Gareth Bruce, who is navigating personal loss. Her leadership is inspiring. The next matches will be tougher—we must stay grounded and focused,” Fontes told AFECAVOL.

As the only team to play twice so far, Belize have claimed six straight sets and earned the highest point tally in the competition. They rest on Tuesday, while their closest contenders take the court.
